Hold the Phone: Obama Sued For What Now?

Hold the Phone: Obama Sued For What Now?

Please bear with me,  folks. This story is apparently a week-plus old, but I'm just now learning about it ... as we speak I'm on the horn with my Information Czar, Mr. Gutierrez ...

Wait a second. You're saying that LAST WEEK, Barack Obama was sued for being ineligible to run for president? On grounds that he is NOT, in fact, a United States citizen? Sounds fishy to me. Why would the mainstream media have ignored this?

...

Touche! Well, has Obama not furnished a copy of his Hawaiian birth certificate?

...

A forgery you say? Three independent sources you say? Are any of these so-called analyses available for public scrutiny?

...

Huh. Really spent some time on that, didn't they.

...

I know, this could be huge. But tell me again who filed the suit.

...

The plot thickens! Philip Berg, prominent Philadelphia attorney and Hillary Clinton supporter. Okay, Gutierrez. Well done sir. I'll take it from here.

Okay folks, sorry about that -- but again, I'm still trying to wrap my teeny tiny brain around this one. There is a rather complex allegation stated in this lawsuit, which involves various technicalities in citizenship laws, as well as inconsistencies in Obama's record. If this interests you, I'd recommend reading this article, which seems to spell it all out fairly well.

Again, there's nary an article to be found in the so-called mainstream media about this, apart from the Philadelphia Times Herald. Of course, that should come as no surprise since, indeed, Obama appears to be the tacit endorsee of all the major media outside of the Faux News and "conservative talk radio" crowd. But it does seem odd that the GOP shill mudslinger media haven't jumped all over this. Perhaps they know something we don't, and are content to let the situation play itself out.

With all that said, here's my take:

From a legal standpoint, I don't think anything will come of this. The Obama machine will succeed in quashing the suit one way or the other -- by hook or by crook, as they say. I think the remainder of the Dem convention will go by the script, without major incident, and Barack Obama will emerge as the nominee.

However, I think the adversaries of Obama will indeed pick up on this after the conventions are over. And while they may not succeed in taking Obama out of the race altogether, they very well might succeed in raising more doubts about his patriotism.

Basically, if this does turn into a big story and Obama is not able to prove -- beyond a reasonable doubt, in the court of public opinion -- that he is a bona fide American citizen, that's all she wrote. Barring any major scandals/bombshells of his own, John McCain will win in November and he'll win HUGE.

Meanwhile, all eyes will certainly be on Hillary tonight -- to look for any subtle winks and/or nods to her followers.

I still contend that this election is largely political theater, due to both sides being owned and operated by the same interests. Besides, for all we know the "powers that be" have already decided the outcome. And yet, you really have to hand it to these people.

They know how to put on a show.

  • Conservative Blogs/Media aren't covering this story because, as we all know, it's a load of hooey. Like, LittleGreenFootballs: http://littlegreenfootballs.com/article/31008_Birth_Certificate_Troofers_Bite_the_Dust

  • When has that ever stopped them before?

  • Obama -- like the boss -- Born in the USA! "FactCheck.org staffers have now seen, touched, examined and photographed the original birth certificate. We conclude that it meets all of the requirements from the State Department for proving U.S. citizenship. Claims that the document lacks a raised seal or a signature are false. We have posted high-resolution photographs of the document as "supporting documents" to this article. Our conclusion: Obama was born in the U.S.A. just as he has always said." http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/born_in_the_usa.html

  • That's all well and good -- and I'm just trying to play devil's advocate here -- but FactCheck.org does not address whether the document might be a forgery, it just says it meets all the State Dept. requirements. For example, they don't compare it to other birth certificates in the same year, etc. Not that it matters. I would be very surprised if the right-wingers don't bat this one around a little, even if they do qualify it as probably being a hoax.

  • You may be right, Steve, about this damaging Obama in the court of public opinion. Still, I'm confident that what Obama loses in patriotism points from this story (which I believe is being ignored by the MSM because it rings false), he'll make up in debates with McCain, who's gonna look like more and more like a meals-on-wheels candidate when the bright lights of general election TV start shining his way. What concerns me is the actual court of law... after all, we all remember what happens when presidential politics last met with the legal justice system. Might we be witnessing the prologue to another historic 5-4 Supreme Court decision that reeks of back-room politics? Why leave electoral power in the hands of the people when you can find a way to further disenfranchise them by "legal" means?

  • Excellent point. If indeed there is any merit to these allegations -- and I would certainly hope not, just for the sake of a free and fair election -- they could be holding their powder. It will be interesting to see what happens with this suit, if it gets thrown out or whatever. To a certain extent I agree about the debates, although I thought the same thing with Kerry v. Bush. Granted, Obama is much more dynamic than Kerry (understatement), but like Kerry he tends to overthink/overtalk the issues, which doesn't play with a dumbed-down public. McCain is going to be direct and decisive, which appeals to a lot of people, regardless of substance.
